Worked examples: patios
Area is length times width. A 20x20 patio is 20 × 20 = 400 square feet.
| Patio size | Area | Plain concrete (HomeGuide) | Stamped (HomeGuide) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10x10 | 100 sq ft | $400 to $1,200 | $800 to $1,900 |
| 12x12 | 144 sq ft | $600 to $1,700 | $1,150 to $2,750 |
| 20x20 | 400 sq ft | $1,600 to $4,800 | $3,200 to $7,600 |
| 15x30 | 450 sq ft | $1,800 to $5,400 | $3,600 to $8,550 |
The 10x10, 12x12 and 20x20 totals are HomeGuide's published figures (HomeGuide, HomeGuide). The 15x30 plain total is HomeGuide's rate applied to 450 square feet ($4 to $12 × 450). The 15x30 stamped total is our arithmetic using HomeGuide's $8 to $19 rate ($8 × 450 = $3,600; $19 × 450 = $8,550).
Worked examples: driveways
A two-car driveway of 20x20 is 400 square feet. HomeGuide lists $2,400 to $6,000 for that size, and Angi lists $3,200 to $6,000. A 24x24 driveway is 576 square feet, which HomeGuide lists at $3,500 to $8,600 and Angi at $4,600 to $8,600.
Long driveways are common searches. Length alone is not enough, so we assume a 10-foot width. That is an assumption, not a measurement of your driveway. Area is length × width:
| Length (10 ft wide) | Area | HomeGuide basic $6 to $10 | Angi $8 to $20 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 ft | 1,000 sq ft | $6,000 to $10,000 | $8,000 to $20,000 |
| 200 ft | 2,000 sq ft | $12,000 to $20,000 | $16,000 to $40,000 |
| 300 ft | 3,000 sq ft | $18,000 to $30,000 | $24,000 to $60,000 |
Those are our multiplications of the published rates, and real quotes on long driveways depend on access, grade, thickness and drainage. A Bay Area contractor guide lists a 640 square foot two-car driveway at $6,400 to $16,000 (Cardona Construction).
What moves the price
- Size. More square feet means a higher total, though setup costs make small jobs pricier per square foot.
- Demolition and removal. HomeGuide lists about $2 to $6 per square foot to remove an old slab.
- Thickness and reinforcement. HomeGuide lists at least 4 inches for standard vehicles, 5 to 6 inches for heavy ones, and rebar at about $1 to $3 per square foot extra.
- Finish. Broom, exposed aggregate, colored and stamped finishes differ in price and upkeep.
- Access, slope and drainage. Tight access, steep grades and drainage fixes add labor.
- Permits and inspections. HomeGuide lists permits at about $50 to $200 for a driveway, and Angi notes they vary by municipality. We don't state local permit rules. Ask your contractor and your city.
What to ask a contractor to itemize
- Demolition and haul-off
- Base preparation
- Thickness and reinforcement
- Finish and color
- Sealing
- Permits, if any
- Warranty terms and exclusions
Then compare quotes line by line using the contractor checklist.
DIY versus a contractor
Pouring concrete is physical and unforgiving. Mistakes with base, joints or finishing are expensive to undo. If you consider DIY, factor in tools, delivery, disposal and time. We don't cover DIY products on this site.
Repair costs
If your concrete is damaged but not failed, repair or resurfacing may cost less than replacement. See the repair and resurfacing guide.
Thinking about pavers?
Pavers have their own cost drivers. See the paver cost guide, or the concrete vs pavers comparison.
